Coexistence is essential to Islam
Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah’s lecture to Muslim Americans in Washington:
There is no contradiction between Islam and devotion to civil society, social culture, and coexistence with others; it is essential to Islam.
Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah gave a public lecture to Muslims in Washington, arranged by the ADAMS Center, in which he stressed the importance of the “naturalization of Islam” in America, saying, “There is no contradiction between Islam and civil society or social culture”; confirming that coexistence with others – no matter what their religion is – is fundamental to Islam.
Professor Bin Bayyah mentioned that the “Madina treaty” developed by the Messenger of Allah was the forerunner to the development of the so-called modern day concept of the state, saying, “The Madina treaty stipulates that citizens of different religions are one nation.” He added that the treaty should be a model for us today.
He urged American Muslims to present a positive image of Islam through the practice of the religion “as it is”: a religion of mercy, beauty and tolerance – not a religion of hate – citing the words of the Prophet, peace be upon him: “Treat people with good conduct,” highlighting the use of the word “people” and not “Muslims” exclusively.
In this context, Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah encouraged the Muslims to put themselves in everything that would benefit human society and represents the common values ??of the community such as healthcare, the economy and human rights, saying, “Participate in the joys and challenges of community.”
He called to rectify the concept of jihad noting that it is not just about fighting, but rather has a meaning of “the most comprehensive effort” including providing good to all human beings.
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,
I had submitted a question to the Shaykh when he visited ADAMS center on (June 5th – I believe) and gave his lecture on coexistence. When will you post the answer to the questions that the Shaykh was not able to answer after his lecture?
My question(s): “Who is best qualified to develop the methodology for co-existence [that the Shaykh highlighted needs to be developed for Muslims living in non-Muslim lands] based on Qur’an, Sunnah & other Islamic scholarly knowledge/experience? And will the Shaykh (given his vast knowledge, experience & qualification both secular & Islamic) take on the responsibility to supervise such an effort which will be beneficial to not just our Ummah but to the entire mankind (as they will benefit from the guidance of Islam) for generations to come?
Jazakallahu Khairan Kathira.
