Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah \u00a0named Among \u00a0world\u2019s most influential Muslim<\/strong><\/p>\n

President of Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies, SHAYKH ABDULLAH BIN BAYYAH, has been named the 9th most influential Muslim in the world, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n

The 81-year-old Mauritanian scholar was noted for addressing the role moderate religious leaders can play in enlightening Muslim public opinion about contemporary issues in line with a temperate attitude that calls for establishing a culture of peace, love and respect of the otherThe honour was bestowed on him by the \u201cMuslim 500,\u201d an annual publication which ranks the most influential Muslims in the world.<\/p>\n

The Muslim 500 is compiled by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan in cooperation with Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in the United States.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah\u2019s influence is derived from his scholarship, piety and preaching.<\/p>\n

Uniquely, all of the different sects and schools of Muslims respect him as a scholar.<\/p>\n

A testament to this is the notable fact that whilst he is not a Salafi, the Saudi government<\/p>\n

promulgates his fatwas as authoritative. He is an instructor at King Abdulaziz University in<\/p>\n

Jeddah and was the deputy head of the Union of Muslim Scholars having previously been<\/p>\n

a Judge at the High Court of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Head of Shariah<\/p>\n

Affairs at the Ministry of Justice.<\/p>\n

Education<\/strong>:<\/strong> Sheikh bin Bayyah was raised in a household<\/p>\n

famous for its scholars, and his Sheikh Mahfoudh<\/p>\n

bin Bayyah, was the head of the Conference of<\/p>\n

Mauritanian Scholars established after the country\u2019s<\/p>\n

independence. Sheikh bin Bayyah studied in the<\/p>\n

Mauritanian centres of learning known as Mahadhir,<\/p>\n

in which all the sacred sciences were taught including:<\/p>\n

jurisprudence, legal theory, syntax, language, rhetoric,<\/p>\n

Qur’anic exegesis and its auxiliary sciences, and the<\/p>\n

science of Prophetic tradition.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diplomat<\/strong>:<\/strong> As a member of the International Islamic<\/p>\n

Fiqh <\/em>Academy or Al Majma\u2019 al Fiqhi <\/em>of the<\/p>\n

Organization of the Islamic Conference, Sheikh<\/p>\n

bin Bayyah is at the forefront of the legal arm of a<\/p>\n

dynamic organization with a permanent delegation<\/p>\n

to the United Nations.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Author<\/strong>:<\/strong> Having written numerous texts, Sheikh<\/p>\n

bin Bayyah\u2019s scholarly explorations have gone global<\/p>\n

through speaking engagements that draw crowds of<\/p>\n

tens of thousands. He has spoken at length about<\/p>\n

the endurance of the Islamic legal tradition and also<\/p>\n

written extensively on rulings for Muslims living as<\/p>\n

minorities in foreign lands, or fiqh al aqaliyaat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Activist<\/strong>:<\/strong> In June 2013, Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah<\/p>\n

visited the White House where he met with senior<\/p>\n

advisers and aides to President Obama. He called for<\/p>\n

the protection of the Syrian people and the Muslim<\/p>\n

minority in Myanmar. Also, he met with Bill Gates<\/p>\n

during the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi in<\/p>\n

April 2013. He recently initiated the \u2018Muslim Council<\/p>\n

of Elders\u2019 which embraces leading scholars (including<\/p>\n

the Sheikh of Al-Azhar), and presided over a large<\/p>\n

gathering of religious scholars at a forum entitled<\/p>\n

\u2018Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Marrakesh Declaration<\/strong>: Sheikh Abdallah bin<\/p>\n

Bayyah led around 250 Muslim religious leaders, in<\/p>\n

addition to approximately 50 non-Muslim religious<\/p>\n

leaders, in a three day summit in Marrakesh entitled:<\/p>\n

\u2018The Rights of Religious Minorities in Predominantly<\/p>\n

Muslim Majority Communities: Legal Framework and<\/p>\n

a Call to Action\u2019. The summit used the original Charter<\/p>\n

of Medina, drawn up by the Prophet Muhammad<\/p>\n

(PBUH) himself, as a basis for addressing the current<\/p>\n

crisis of religious minorities in parts of the Muslim<\/p>\n

world. With extremists committing violence in the<\/p>\n

name of Islam against other religions, as well as against<\/p>\n

most Muslims, it was necessary to voice the position of<\/p>\n

normative Islam vis-\u00e0-vis religious minorities through<\/p>\n

a gathering of its leading scholars. The summit concluded<\/p>\n

with the release of the 750 word Marrakesh Declaration<\/p>\n
