E<\/span>ritrean\u00a0President Isaias Afwerki<\/strong>\u00a0and Ethiopian\u00a0Prime\u00a0Minister\u00a0Abiy Ahmed<\/strong>\u00a0received the 2018 \u2018Imam Al Hassan Bin Ali Award for Promoting Peace\u2019, awarded by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan,\u00a0Minister<\/span>\u00a0of Foreign Affairs and International\u00a0Cooperation<\/span>\u00a0of the United Arab\u00a0Emirates<\/span>, in recognition of their central role in ending the long-running conflict between their countries and promoting the values of tolerance and coexistence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The award was received by the Eritrean and Ethiopian Ambassadors to the UAE on their states\u2019 behalf.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The award was presented at the fifth\u00a0assembly<\/span>\u00a0of the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies in Abu Dhabi, with delegates from over 80 countries, including leading religious scholars, and government and civil\u00a0society<\/span>\u00a0experts, to discuss the role of religion in promoting world peace.<\/p>\n

The theme of the forum was \u201cAlliance of Virtues: An opportunity for Global Peace\u201d.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0keynote<\/span>\u00a0speech was delivered by the Forum\u2019s President, Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah. Speakers at the conference included Ambassador Sam Brownback, US Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, and Shaykh Mohammad bin Abdul\u00a0Karim<\/span>\u00a0al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League.<\/p>\n

In previous years, the annual prize was awarded to Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, from India, for his long work in the quest for peace through his scholarship; The Interfaith Platform of the\u00a0Central African Republic<\/span>, which works to end violence in their country; and the Family House, which works on creating\u00a0harmony<\/span>\u00a0between Christians and Muslims in Egypt.<\/p>\n

The Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies, sponsored by His\u00a0Highness<\/span>\u00a0Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan,\u00a0Minister\u00a0for Foreign Affairs and International\u00a0Cooperation, brings together the best global Islamic scholarly expertise for solutions to world peace issues, especially the challenge of extremism and politicization of religions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
